Sarah Breedlove–who later would come to be known as Madam C. J. Walker (1867-1919) was “the first Black, self-made millionaire woman in America” and she made her fortune thanks to her homemade line of hair care products. She was inspired to create these products after struggling to find items that catered towards Black, female hair. This led to the emergence of the “Walker system”, a hair care treatment. This creation boomed. It became known across the nation, transforming Walker from an uneducated farm laborer and laundress, into one of the twentieth century’s most successful, celebrated female entrepreneurs.
A talented business woman with a knack for self-promotion, Walker built an empire, at first selling products directly to Black women, then employing “beauty culturalists” to hand-sell her wares. The successful millionaire used her fortune to fund scholarships for women at the Tuskegee Institute and donated large parts of her wealth to the NAACP, the black YMCA, and other charities.
Inspiring other women even today, you can learn more about her life and the countless obstacles she had to face in the Netflix series about her life, titled Self Made.
